The Hispanic Center will continue to focus on delivering the best training to the Latino community. Education and training is the path that will lead the Latino community to strengthened talents and a better standard of living.

Workforce Solutions Training Programs

Workforce Solutions is The Hispanic Center's employer-driven training program that provides work readiness, Vocational English as a Second Language, and job skill training for entry-level occupations across the regions' various industry clusters.

This program is achieved through a strategic coordination with Jewish Family and Children's Services and Goodwill Industries, and has an 80% post graduate employment rate. Call the Hispanic Center or click here to request more information. Download the list of course sessions

  • Financial Training Session 3
    Orientations: 6/26 from 6pm-8pm, 7/2 from 3pm-5pm, 7/8 from 6pm-8pm
    Classes begin July 14, 2008. Run Monday thru Thursday, 5pm-8pm and end September 11.
  • Financial Training Session 4
    Orientations: 9/4 from 6pm-8pm, 9/10 from 3pm-5pm, 9/16 from 6pm-8pm
    Classes begin September 22, 2008. Run Monday thru Thursday, 5pm-8pm and end November 20.
  • GED Classes
    Session 2: Starts April 16th, 2008
    Session 3: Starts July 7th, 2008

Training in Financial Services

The objective of the Financial Services is to prepare Latinos and other non-native English speakers to start a professional career in a bank. The course helps to improve business English, computer and keyboarding skills. It also helps participants develop resumes and interview skills. Graduates also receive job placement support. The training is completed in 9 weeks (part-time usually evening and Saturday classes).

Bilingual Customer Service

costumer-serviceThe Hispanic Center sponsors a Workforce Solutions Bilingual Customer Service Training in collaboration with Goodwill Industries. The training prepares participants for careers in bilingual customer service, working in the health, banking and retail industries. The training develops customer service skills in the American workplace, improves cross-cultural communication skills (speaking and listening), helps create a resume, develops interview skills and prepares students to take the National Retail Foundation Assessment and Customer Service Certification Exam. Graduates also receive job placement support. Complete training in 8 weeks, classes are held 10am-4pm Monday thru Thursday.

GED (What is the GED Diploma)

The test of General Education Development or GED is a set of five tests that measure competency in the following subjects:

  • Writing, Social Studies, Science, Literature/Arts, and Mathematics
When passed, certifies the taker to have academic skills at the level of standard American or Canadian high school graduates. The minimum age to take the GED exam is 18 and is available in English or Spanish. Classes conducted in English for the GED are free at CCAC, call 412-393-6911 for classes offered in Downtown or call 412-469-6258 for classes in South campus. Classes conducted in Spanish are now being offered at Goodwill Literacy Initiative located on 2600 East Carson Street in Southside of Pittsburgh. The class has open enrollment. TRAINING REFERALS

There are numerous training opportunities available offered by other organizations in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The objectives of these programs are to develop basic skills in demand in today's job market.

Computer Classes for Non-Native English Speakers

A combined ESL (English as Second Language) and Computer Class meets on Tuesday and Thursday from 6-8pm at the Goodwill Literacy Initiative 2600 East Carson Street on Southside of Pittsburgh. Learn to navigate on the computer, computer vocabulary and programs, practice keyboarding and develop mouse skills. English Courses for non-native English speakers who want to find work in the Hospitality Industry.

Improve English and Find work in the Hospitality Industry. Jobs are open in Hospitals and Hotels for housekeeping staff. Classes are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 5-8pm, April 21 through May 23 2008. Classes will be held at Goodwill of Southwestern PA, 2300 East Carson Street, Pgh (Southside), PA 15203 Call Jackie at 412-390-2308, Melissa at 412-390-2361, or Shena at 412-322-2716. English as Second Language

Allegheny Intermediate Unit is offering English as a Second Language Program. All of these classes are free and offer open enrollment. The classes take place on 1401 Forbes Avenue, Suite 225 in the Stevenson building, located between downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland, in front of Mercy Hospital close to Duquesne University. Basic Math and Writing Skills

Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council teaches basic skills in reading, writing and math. Social Services recipients are eligible to participate in the job readiness program. For more information call 412-661-7323 or visit www.gplc.org
